Lancome Grandiose Mascara: OMG

This post really doesn’t need much text. I applied a coat of mascara and my jaw dropped. I didn’t curl my lashes.

Lancome’s latest heavyweight mascara launches 21 Aug 2014 in Singapore and boasts a special twisted “swan-neck” wand that is angled perfectly for you to create intense, open/curved, fan like lashes.

I’ll say it definitely delivers on the “intense” part. I can’t speak as to its curling power for stubborn coarse lashes cos mine are quite fine and usually easy to curl, so I definitely got a fan-like effect as well.

1 coat is enough for very dramatic thickening, and I actually wouldn’t recommend 2 coats because it will start to clump.

The cons?

The pricetag is hefty. SG$60 for a tube.

It’s also not waterproof. (That’s not really a con for me, but it is for many people.) I actually had a bit of problems removing it with my Bioderma cleansing water, so it IS definitely water/smudge-resistant, even though it’s not stated that it’s water-/oil-/smudge-PROOF.

The most tricky thing is probably application. With most mascaras you spend time trying to build up volume and length. With this one however, I feel like you need to spend time combing it out and taking away product because so much goes on right from the start.

If you want natural looking lashes, this is not for you. If you like it as big as thick as black and as crazy as possible, grab this.

RECEIVE $500 WORTH OF PRODUCTS FREE!

If you’re in Singapore, Sephora and Lancome are running a promotion on 21 Aug! The first 3 people to purchase a tube of Grandiose mascara at Sephora ION will receive a $500 Lancome gift bag filled with lots of full-size products.

If you’re not able to make it to the start of the line, don’t worry cos the next 150 customers to purchase Grandiose will receive a beauty kit worth more than $165.

So if you’re already intending to check the mascara out, it’s well worth the bit of extra effort cos you’re getting a HUGE return on that $60 investment just on that day.

You guys tried it? I think it’s getting very mixed reviews from people depending on the type of formula, brush, and effect we want. What do you think?

Bobbi Brown Sheer Brights Eye Shadows

Bobbi Brown launches the Sheer Brights eyeshadow range in Singapore 1 September. These retail for US$22/SGD$37 each, and there will be 14 shades available.

Meant as a sheer, luminous soft wash of color on the lids that you can pair easily with existing neutrals or a simple liner, these have a slightly different texture from many of the regular shadows I’ve tried.

Texture:

Sheer Brights are mostly very silky and extremely finely-milled, and most of the colors I received for review are very soft.

These come in 3 textures: regular, shimmer wash, and metallic.

Of the 3, I definitely prefer the metallics most, followed by the regulars. The Shimmer Washes are VERY very sheer; you almost can’t see the color clearly when they’re on. Good if you like applying a shadow all over your lids as a base. I don’t personally do that, so I can’t find much use for this type of texture. The regular shades are a bit hit or miss. Some are pretty, and some don’t adhere easily to the lids even with a base. The metallic texture is really lovely though.

Pigmentation:

Because of the fine texture these blend beautifully. But without an eye base, some of these shades will blend right off your lid and not grab onto your skin. Definitely recommend a flat or synthetic brush, and a good primer when using these.

Colors

All the colors are gorgeous in the pan. They look so Spring-like and fresh, though I kinda wish I’d received some neutrals to try cos most of us will wear those on a regular basis.

The only problem with the colors is that not all of them go on true to how they appear in the pan. And some are so soft and sheer that they look like a light pastel shimmery wash on the lids; not chalky or ugly, but it’s hard to even tell what color you’re wearing.

The 2 shades (Aegean Blue and Sea Glass) used on the lids in my demo above were my faves from the 6 I tried.

And a segue-way to mention I just put up a post on dayre.me/makeupbox - day 246 - talking about my recent experience with #botox (well, botulinum) for face slimming. This seems to be very uncommon in the West but increasingly popular in Asia. And for square-jawed girls like me it makes a big diff.

Hello, Viva Glam Rihanna II!

I was a little shocked and apprehensive when I uncapped the tube and twisted the lipstick up. Brown lipsticks (excepting nude tones and super-dark noir ones) are my Cryptonite.

I cannot pull them off. Never have been able to without looking corpse-like.

So when I saw Riri’s latest release, I thought “Oh darn this is only going to look good on caramel skins.”

After I swatched them on my wrist, I still wasn’t entirely convinced I could pull off the 90s glam metallic lipstick alone, but the gloss is nice, and layered together, I have to say the final “cosmic explosion” effect is pretty darned gorgeous and would work on most people (as long as you’re up for a little drama).

Long story short? If you love brown lips on you or have Rihanna’s bronze/caramel type skin (I think this would look fantastic on a lot of Latino and Indian women too) you might be able to pull off just the lipstick alone. The rest of us may need to layer them for the best effect, or just wear the gloss.

And as we know, Viva Glam sales go to a good cause, and it doesn’t help that the packaging is drop-dead gorgeous. Would you buy both? One? Or neither?

Soft Olive Smoke: A Clé de Peau Beauté Makeup Pictorial

This is probably the most luxe I’ve ever gone with a makeup look. Ever.

Clé de Peau is legendary for their uber-expensive skincare products, and in Singapore, a tube of stick concealer runs at S$116 while a tube of lipstick is $70. The newly launched Radiant Fluid foundation is $175.

That being said, after trying out some of their products, I do have to say they have all offered nothing but the best in terms of quality and luxury so far.

My top recommendation to those new to the brand and who are interested in color makeup are their F/W 2014 Eye Color Quads. This range of sensationally smooth and blendable shades come in the most sophisticated colors, and those who want to splurge - but not too much - have the option of purchasing just the eyeshadow refills at $80 (cheaper than most other luxe brands here) and skipping the case.

I have 1 case, which I re-use with all of my 4 quads, only when I need to transport them around for some reason.

One of my faves is 302 Stardust (used for this pictorial), an antique black-gold, golden-olive, and rosy nude quad.

Products used:

Cle de Peau Corrective Cream Veil to prime the skin

Cle de Peau Radiant Fluid Foundation O-20

Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer SX06 as concealer

No powder

Shu Uemura Hard Formula 9 Pencil in Seal Brown on brows

Grape-y! Six Grape Colored Lipsticks in Different Intensities.

I love grape colored lippies. They are purple, often with a hint of pink or rose. The difference between typical deep plum colors and what I call “grape” colors is the lack of brown tones.

Grape shades can make your teeth look whiter, and are far less likely to emphasize bruised tones in your skin.

BUT - the catch is not all of them are easy to wear. The most violet or blue-toned ones can make the skin look a bit sallow, so make sure you have some blush handy.

  1. Lancome Lip Lover 357 - Beginners’ grape. This shade looks purple in the tube but sheers out to a fuchsia-toned tint with slight blue pearl shimmer
  2. OCC Strumpet - A grape with a lot of rose; this one can be worn almost like a regular rose/pink shade, but there’s less red, so it looks a touch more edgy and hip
  3. Make Up Store Magic - An old favorite of mine. I avoid frosty lipstick like the plague UNLESS it is a dark red or purple-toned shade. Because it just looks wicked-cool.
  4. Givenchy Gloss Interdit 15 - this is a deep plum with tons of silver sparks. The texture is semi-sheer, and I do think the best way to wear it is to layer this over a coat of dark lipliner. You get incredible twinkling lacquered lips.
  5. Sephora Bewitch Me - This is the quintessential dark purple toned lip. It has a very blue-toned violet undertone so be careful to add a bit of pink blush if you have yellow-based skin like me. Otherwise you can look sallow in comparison.
  6. Lime Crime Kaleidoscope - This thick sticky gloss is very high-maintenance, but gosh it is pretty. Not for wallflowers! This is a straight violet with a dramatic blue pearl. Wear it if you’re ready to be stared at.

Urban Decay Pulp Fiction Palette Swatches and Review

What’s the difference between this set of nude mattes and the Naked Basics?

That was the first question I asked when I saw it.

I have to say packaging wise, the Naked Basics look much better of course. The Pulp Fiction palette comes in a generic black cardboard with print in McDonald’s red and yellow. Yes, McDonald’s was what I thought of. Glamorous, not.

The interior isn’t particularly exciting looking as well. You get 4 pans of shadows, one split into 2 colors.

Colors

BUT - I must tell you I do prefer this set of colors to the Naked Basics.

I feel the Naked Basics has too many pale beige tones. You could do the job with 4 of the shades in that palette, and a couple of those would look pretty similar on the lids. With Pulp Fiction, you get a better balance of dark to light.

There’s the essential black for defining, a nice deep taupe, a warmer tea-toned medium brown, a beige for blending, and a pearl white for highlighting.

This is a smokier palette than Naked Basics. Meaning if you use equal amounts of each color on your lids, the overall look would be a bit more intense and darker looking than if you used equal amounts of each color from the Naked Basics palette, which contains so many pale beige shades.

Texture

Texture is smooth and fine, but you will need to use a primer. As you can see one of the shots above, without primer, you will get patchiness, as matte pigments don’t like to stick to dry lids. But make sure you use a minimal amount of primer and blend it out properly cos you don’t want the shadows to stick in one patch either.

Be very careful of fallout too. Another problem common to matte shadows.

It lasts if you prime, so I don’t have too much to say about the staying power. I didn’t get oxidation, and I do think matte shadows (when primed properly) have less tendency to crease than shimmers, but they’re not bullet-proof either, so just make sure you prep your skin.

Do I recommend it?

If you LOVE neutrals and don’t already own the Naked Basics, yes this is a good one to look at. ESPECIALLY if you want to create a slightly smokier sexier eye most of the time. Remember the babe in Bruno Mars’ “Just The Way You Are” video? This palette will give you that kind of eye look.

But I’ll be honest - I don’t like the presentation or packaging. I know they want to go with the pulp fiction theme but I think it could have been done better and sleeker. And I know a lot of girls might give it a miss just because the packaging and how the colors are presented is quite “meh”. But that’s just my opinion!

Elizabeth Arden Untold Color Collection

Elizabeth Arden has launched a limited edition color collection inspired by the Untold fragrance franchise.

I received a few of the items for review, and I’ve swatched them here for you!

I have to say I don’t know why I haven’t tried the Arden eyeshadows until now. I’ve always used their skincare products (8 Hour Cream and Ceramide Capsules, etc) but not really their makeup. And I feel kinda silly now cos these shadows are fantastic.

They are very smooth, very buildable, very easy to blend, and beautifully pigmented.

There are 2 quads in the collection. Chic Browns, and Posh Purples.

The 2 lipglosses in the collection are gorgeous as well; gold and violet. I haven’t tried the gold but the purple 16 Intriguing Violet is a lovely sparkly shade. It looks very dramatic in the tube, but you know glosses. They go on a lot sheerer most of the time. Intriguing Violet is more pink than purple once applied on the lips, but at certain angles it does shift slightly violet. The sparkles shift from gold to blue. VERY dimensional.

MAC 2014 Matte Lipstick swatches!

I love Heroine, Fashion Revival, Damn Glamorous, La Vie En Rouge, and ESPECIALLY - Living Legend.

All the shades are very pigmented and dense, more like Viva Glam I and Russian Red (which I prefer) than some of the newer lighter mattes MAC released in recent years, which tend to wear off more patchy and not last as long.

Heroine isn’t a shade I can see most people wearing regularly, but it’s such an interesting shade. More what I would expect from OCC Liptars than from MAC Matte lipsticks.

Feed Your Skin, Feed Your Soul - Clarins x FEED

If you’re sitting in a comfy room surfing the internet on your phone or your computer, you are one of us lucky people in the world who aren’t worrying about where our next meal is coming from.

There are 100 million children around the world who are under-nourished, and 1 in 8 people who go to bed hungry every night. So, since 2011, Clarins has teamed up with the United Nations World Food Programme, “FEED”, as a way of giving back through commerce.

They’re telling us: “Feed your skin, FEED your soul”.

How does it work?

Purchase any of the below treatment serums at TANGS’ Orchard Clarins counter from 3- 17 Oct 2014:

Shaping Facial Lift, Double Serum, HydraQuench Intensive Serum Bi-Phase, White Plus Serum, Super Restorative Serum

and you will automatically receive a FEED Bag with SGD75worth of products, AND Clarins automatically donates proceeds for 10 school meals on your behalf.

Simple enough!

Especially if you’re already a Clarins user. Buying it during this promotion activity incurs no extra cost on your part - you walk home with the full size serum anyway - but you also get an extra pouch of goodies and help do your bit for children in need.

Clarins’ target for 2014 is to reach 5 million school meals by the end of the year. Since 2011, they’ve provided a whopping 3,589,300+ school meals and counting. But there’s still a long way to go to 5 million, so they’re asking us for our help as well!

(For details on similar activities in other countries or more info on the project, visit this link here.)

Anna Sui 2014 Holiday Sweets Makeup Collection

—

O.M.G.

I hate to say it but sometimes the presentation is enough to suck us in.

Anna Sui launches their Holiday Sweets limited edition makeup collection this November, and it includes 2 bonbon boxes with huge pink bows (SGD72), a purple hand mirror (SGD33) and 5 sequined nail color shades in confectionery hues.

The 2 key pieces in the collection have got to be the Holiday Sweet boxes of course! These are “look in a box” kits with 4 pots: coordinated lipgloss, jelly lip balm, cream eyeshadow, and cream blush.

01: Sweet Espresso

"Bittersweet- a grownup flavor not offered to you as a child… Indulge in that once forbidden flavor with this all-grown-up kit."

02: Sugary Sweet

"Soft and sweet, just like a fairytale. You just might become captive to this charmingly saccharine kit."

I received 02 Sugary Sweet for review, and I have to say I really couldn’t bear to dig into these. But I’m glad I did because the gloss and blush are really nice.

  • The pink frosty gloss might be a tad too 80s Barbie for some, but it works nicely over other lip colors.
  • The cream blush is the cream-to-powder type.
  • The lip balm I saw no point in swatching here because it’s mostly just clear. The little jelly dots in the pot don’t give a whole lot of color though they’re cute as anything.
  • The cream shadows were what I was most excited to try but I have to say they are not my favorite as they are the creamy kind (like MAC cream bases) that don’t set. This means you can’t really use them on their own or they will crease and fade after awhile. If you like the colors, use with a very light hand, or use them as a base for powder shadows.

The surprise hit for me was the nail polish I received; 327 Cassis Pink with Black Lamé (SGD24).

SO smooth, SO easy to apply, AND the little irregular sized glitters show beautifully through the nail polish and there’s JUST the right amount so 2 coats gives you a “chocolate-chip ice-cream” effect.

And P.S. they have a delicate rose scent, like everything else in the collection.

Definitely getting more shades once the collection launches!!!

A Peek at MAC’s 2014 Holiday Collection!

Here are a few of my favorite pieces from the MAC Holiday Collection which is launching last week of October.

The collection is split into 3;

Objects of Affection - including 3 pigment sets (SGD65) and 3 lipgloss quads (SGD65).

Heirloom Mix - individual lipsticks, varnishes, blushes, pressed pigments and Cremesheen Glasses. My recommendations are a couple of the glosses, the gloss Just Jewels (apply it over other polishes to transform them!) and the gorgeous matte lipsticks.

Keepsakes - a large collection of gorgeous palettes and pouch sets.

Viva Glamorous sets - there’s a special 6-color lip palette (see image above) containing Viva Glam I - VI, as well as a Viva Glam Riri set. All proceeds go to AIDS research as usual.

It’s not immediately clear why they had to split everything into different collections, when all of them are packaged similarly. It’s just way to confusing for customers. They’re ALL part of the holiday collection, and that’s the only name they should be called, because that’s all any of us is going to remember.

But I DO like a lot of the colors and kits in this year’s release. Are you guys eyeing anything in particular?

Diorskin Star Foundation Review

Dior’s latest foundation. Star, promises to provide a “professional lighting” effect on the face so your imperfections are masked and your contours look more sculpted.

Like many of the latest-generation illuminating foundations, Star creates a glow without being shimmery or dewy, which is good for people with slightly oilier skins.

Texture

Satin finish; feels matte and diffuses light so your pores look smaller, but it still leaves a smooth glow on the skin, like clean skin.

Fluid and lighter in texture than Diorskin Nude, although the satin finish is slightly similar. Diorskin Nude is a bit fluffier and thicker in feel.

TIP: This foundation is very fluid and easy to apply, but it sets fast so blend quickly and make sure your brush or sponge is slightly damp.

Coverage

Medium-buildable; sheer if you use a sponge. This covers discolorations and even some of my dark circles and the best thing is that even after it is built up a bit, it still looks like skin and doesn’t feel tacky.

TIP: You can use a finger to pat on more where you need, without it looking cakey.

Lasting Power

This did not oxidize on me at all, and it lasts through my 10-12 hour days pretty well, although it does fade a bit after about 8 hours, and sooner if you’re out and about sweating up a storm.

I still don’t consider this the best foundation if you have very oily or very dry skin, but if you are combination, normal or slightly dry, this would be good.

Other Things To Note

I did hear from a couple of people that this dried up on their skin and started looking patchy after awhile. I have dry skin and that never happened on me though.

My guess is this foundation doesn’t work with all primers or skin products. I use it with Laura Mercier’s Protect Primer with SPF30 or over my Guerlain Super Aqua Gel Creme and it’s never given me a problem, so I can’t begin to explain why the formula might be seizing up on some people.

Verdict?

I really like this foundation as a good basic formula for slightly oily to combination and normal skin, who need a lasting foundation that isn’t powdery, heavy, or overly-matte. This does a good job of staying consistent-looking for hours (i.e. it has a smooth satiny look all the way through, instead of going on matte and then looking shiny after a few hours).

If you like the look of Diorskin Nude foundation but find it too moisturizing for you, or you just want something a bit lighter feeling, try Star.

Laura Mercier Smooth Finish Flawless Fluide makeup — Laura...

Laura Mercier Smooth Finish Flawless Fluide makeup

Laura Mercier - both the artist and the brand - is obsessed with perfecting the skin. Laura’s been responsible for making A-listers like Madonna, the original Supermodels, and scores of Hollywood stars like Julia Roberts and SJP look like they have naturally flawless skin on camera.

The brand made its name over a decade ago with products like tinted moisturizers, foundation primers, and that cult-favorite two-toned blemish concealer, Secret Camouflage. Long before other brands jumped on the bandwagon and these things became so mainstream.

So every time they launch a new base product, you can be sure I sit up and take note. Their latest foundation offering is Smooth Finish Flawless Fluide, a bi-phase lightweight liquid that has the texture of Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua, the coverage of Make Up For Ever HD, the luminously matte, pore-minimizing finish of Shiseido Future Solution LX Total Radiance, all rolled into one.

Texture and Coverage:

You can see in the texture shot above that it is very liquid and runny, but when you spread it out, you get a smooth and pigmented layer of coverage all over the surface of your skin.

This is a medium coverage foundation that is slightly buildable. You can use this with a sponge for lighter coverage or build up with your fingers for slightly more coverage where you need.

This already has good enough coverage to hide discolorations and even out the skin, but if you need more coverage use concealer, don’t keep layering on more and more foundation even though this is quite natural looking.

Finish and Wear:

This is an oil-free formula.

The product sets to a velvety finish. Meaning it is matte, but not powdery-matte (use a powder foundation if you want that). If you have normal to slightly dry skin, you can skip powder.

A number of the latest-generation foundations share this very impressive texture; they feel weightless, look non-shiny but not flat, so you just look like you have very clean skin.

The bi-phase formula really sets and locks into place. Even though Laura Mercier doesn’t claim that this is a long-wear foundation, I wore it out for a 12-hour day and it stayed put without streaking or oxidizing in the heat and humidity, and I’ve also heard from people with oilier skins saying it worked very well for them.

Recommended for:

Moderately Oily to Slightly Dry skins that need coverage for unevenness. It felt fine for me but if you are dry and live in a dry climate, this might not have sufficient moisture to stay fresh-looking all day.

I might not recommend this for extremely oily skins either, unless you have a heavy-duty oil-absorbing primer, even though I’m hearing from many people that it works very well for them. It’s just that it isn’t designed specifically as a long-wear foundation for extremely oily skins, so while it might actually work ok, I hesitate to suggest this as the best option now until I hear more feedback from you guys.

Another group of people I’d suggest this for would actually be brides!

If you have a skin type that falls between the 2 mentioned above, and need something that will stay put and look good, but not heavy and thick, grab a sample and give this a try. It doesn’t contain SPF so it will not flash back in photos. And it looks very natural as long as you get a good color match.

Cons

You need to shake the bottle. A LOT. The pigments will settle and separate from the liquid solvent, so if you don’t shake for almost a minute the first time you use it, you might get a trickle of runny silicone-y fluid when you squeeze.

Also the bottle is prone to “spouting”. Make sure you tap the bottle with the nozzle pointing up, and squeeze the sides slightly to get the air bubbles up to the tip before you open, or you could have a lot of foundation streaming out of the nozzle once you uncap it.

Lastly, this can settle in lines if you apply it thickly in areas where you have more creases or expressions (eye area and sides of nose). I recommend sticking with a light layer around those areas and just using the appropriate concealer to cover flaws.
