Confession: Pretty Beauty Luxuries I Can’t Bear to Use
I am not one to be over-protective of expensive possessions like bags and shoes. The more you use them, the more you justify the amount spent, I say.
For me the worst form of wastage is spending a huge amount on something, then hiding it away in pristine condition and never enjoying it fully. (You will NOT ever find me keeping chairs in their plastic covers. Uh-uh.)
But there are times when I can’t help treating certain objects like prized jewels to collect and admire in pristine condition. (Which is completely senseless because makeup has a shelf life.) Here are the few I have a weird attachment to…

NARS lipsticks in Roman Holiday and Schiapp
It’s not the price, though they ARE expensive. There are more expensive lipsticks than these, and they aren’t exactly exclusive. But every time I decide I will use them and take them out of their cardboard boxes, I’ll just sigh, stare, put them right back, and then try to satisfy myself with a similar color from another brand.
I cannot explain why since I can easily replace these if I use them up!
Smashbox Masquerade Eyeshadow Palette
This little palette is genius. Not just because it has some great usable colors (these are colors you can dupe and substitute easily), but because unlike other eye palettes, which can leave you paralyzed with options, the Masquerade palette is simple.
You do the Tic-Tac-Toe and pick 3 colors either horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, and they’re all perfectly coordinated for you.
They should make ALL larger eye palettes work like these so women are never at a loss as to how to combine colors! Until then, I will hang on to this one…
Chanel No19 Parfum
Now, THIS, I can’t bear to use often, because it cost an absolute BOMB, and because I already have a large bottle of No19 in Eau de Parfum concentration.
If you happen to like the scent of No19 in lighter concentrations, let me tell you the Parfum version smells SO much better. I almost hate to wear it because I feel like it will “spoil” me and I won’t enjoy the other versions anymore.
(And a bigger reason is I don’t want to develop a habit for Chanel in pure perfume concentration. It’s not the cheapest treat in the world.)
Guerlain Terracotta “Sun In The City” Golden Glimmer Powder
This gorgeous gold powder isn’t just gold. When you rub it on your skin, it scatters into micro-pigments of bronze, copper, pink, pearl (and all shades of beautiful). I have never seen another highlighter THIS pretty and I can’t even really do it justice on camera, or I’d show you a swatch.
I bought this on my honeymoon in New York last year, and I’ve never seen it anywhere else since, so I’m VERY careful with it, though I do use it occasionally as a “special occasion” highlighter.
I try to tactically dab a bit from different spots each time so it doesn’t wear away unevenly, and I dread the day I will finally see a visible dent in it.
Tell me if you guys have any similarly irrational reactions to certain “treasures” as well… I could be all alone in my insanity!
